Moses Rose’s Hideout bar owner Vince Cantu attempts to speak at Thursday’s city council. Readers are backing Cantu.Fort Worth Development Alliance had the right of “eminent domain” so it used it to oust the last holdouts to build a racetrack.Hang in there, Mr. Cantu. I am rooting for you.In the middle of the 1960s, the state used eminent domain to clear out the community of Berg’s Mill in southeast San Antonio.
The sad part of the story is that the reason for taking the property and paying the owners very little is that the property was to be converted into a park area for the mission. It was more than 40 years before anything was done with the property. On a bright note, the members of the Berg’s Mill community have managed to remain in contact and friends even after all these decades.I am not a fan of the use of eminent domain as a means to take property from individuals.
