What happened to working hard to better your life? Freebies do no more than create mediocrity. Instilling a good work ethic in younger generations will not only benefit them but society as a whole.Re: “To imagine a more fair and free America, read these words from 1829,” Opinion, Dec. 21:
New York Time Columnist Jamelle Bouie prescribes in great detail and with unmistakable relish the measures taken by totalitarian and communist regimes since at least the French Revolution. He seems to have no understanding of where those measures lead. Thomas Skidmore can be forgiven, since he was writing in 1829, for not knowing the inevitable outcome of the policies he advocated. Bouie, on the other hand, has no excuse. He can look back to the bloodiest century in human history. Governments, all calling themselves socialist, be it National or Soviet or the Chinese Communist Party, murdered at least 125 million of their own citizens. All these governments “promised” radical democratic equality.
To impose such measures on American citizens would require the same crimes and would lead to the same outcomes. The lesson of history is that socialism — radical democratic equality — leads inexorably to the guillotine, the Gulag and the gas chamber.Re: “Newfound cemetery could shed light on burials after battle,” Front page, Sunday:
