This op-ed contains some of the clearest language for San Antonio voters to consider before they participate in the May 6 election. Most voters have received the “fact sheets” from opponents of Proposition A, the Justice Charter, in the mail but these fall short of delivering the background/history and possible consequences of their vote.: Mayor Ron Nirenberg “said he supports ending mass incarceration, but has said reform is the work of state and federal governments.
This gives me a better understanding of how the mayor might be losing faith in fighting to retain the city’s rights for self-government in key areas. The GOP, with Gov. Greg Abbott leading the charge, is working hard to reduce the city’s authority to do anything beyond choosing the color of our street stripes.
As we get closer to making a decision about the direction we take to make San Antonio better for all, please resolve to understand the consequences of your vote. In case you haven’t noticed, abridging of personal liberties and self-rule are under full scale attack.
