Readers are split when it comes to recent legislation from Texas leaders to put the Ten Commandments in public schools.Re: “Bill would require Ten Commandments in public schools,” Metro, Sunday:As a former American history and government teacher, I disagree. I wonder, is King aware that the Ten Commandments appear in one form or other in at least six books of the Bible. Roman Catholics and Lutherans follow St.

Also baked into our Constitution is the separation of church and state. Placing these commandments in state-supported public schools seems to me a violation of this cherished concept.

Public schools are not religious institutions for a reason. Our founders were mostly Deists, they believed in intelligent design/God, but not revealed religion. We must keep our public schools free from any prescribed religions and allow our children to form their own beliefs based on educated reasoning.

If parents want their children to learn according to some prescribed religion, let them attend religious schools but not at taxpayer expense. The First Amendment does not explicitly guarantee a separation of church and state. It only tells the people of the time that they do not have to belong to the Church of England any more.

In Sunday’s edition of the Express-News, a letter writer, “Separate church and state,” in the Opinion section and a story, “Scripture lands Va. teacher in legal fight,” in the Faith section both make the separation of church and state mistake.
