Once again, an Illinois governmental agency has made the predictable decision in voting to make the former Route 53 corridor a greenway.
In selling the land where new homes could have been built, the tax base broadened and money sent back to the state so less can be taken from the taxpayers as a whole. This is what successful states do -- grow their way into health and create a cycle of growth health that helps the economic life of its citizens. This, of course, is never the route of Illinois governing authorities.
When I read the reason for not developing this corridor, I shook my head at the foolishness of these people -- climate change. This decision will not accomplish one single thing for this supposed issue. There is a demand for new homes, and that demand will not go away. These homes will be built somewhere. So instead of Lake County, they will probably now be built in Wisconsin.
There are no green areas saved, the developing will just shift 10 miles to the west or a few miles to the north. What will not be saved or helped is the bottom line for taxpayers. We are just targets for hungry state and local always looking for more.
