I live across the street from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ stake center. For the last month, the sprinklers have come on around 6 o’clock and run in until at least 11:30 every night, including nights when it’s pouring rain outside.

The Angel Moroni atop The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Bountiful Temple, Dec. 10, 2022.

A member of the stake presidency was informed of this a few weeks ago, and he assured me that it has been reported multiple times. Apparently, whoever is responsible for property management is not attending to it. Granted, there are no current government-mandated restrictions on water use, but with the drought cycle that we are in and the shrinking Great Salt Lake and potential near-future disaster this presents, one would think that the LDS Church would want to set an example of water conservation for the community — to spend a tiny piece of their stockpiled considerable financial resources on efficient and water-wise lawn irrigation systems.

Opinion: Juneteenth has a particularly poignant history in Utah. It’s our responsibility to tell the story.
