Letter: 'Elected officials should be trustworthy, held to a high standard of ethics and be responsible for the welfare and safety of their constituents.'

Elected officials should be trustworthy, held to a high standard of ethics and be responsible for the welfare and safety of their constituents. I am encouraged to see that Ms. Fowler has apologized for this incident as well as promised to reflect on her “relationship with alcohol.”

These comments do not negate the fact that Councilwoman Fowler has damaged the trust of residents of Salt Lake City and has been arrested for a criminal act. As a believer in her right to due process, I feel that if convicted of this DUI, she should resign her position as councilwoman and spend more time working on her rehabilitation plan. I hope that she is able to benefit from the treatment she needs.
