The systematic destruction of public educational institutions appears to be a pervasive theme throughout conservativism.

Driven and funded by oligarchs and furthered by political forces in their service, there are at least two objectives. The first is maintaining wealth by the oligarchs’ refusal to pay for educational services or contribute to the society that created their wealth. That is evidenced by laws that are introduced by politicians, and funded by those same individuals, to reduce their tax burden. They cling to their wealth and refuse to acknowledge that they didn’t arrive at that station alone.

The second objective is more insidious. By reducing the level of competency in education, society spawns a class of ignorance that is easily malleable by forces that would choose to manipulate them. By underfunding schools and underpaying teachers, the chance for a good education is stolen from every child in a public school. Teachers are not in the field to become wealthy. They are there because of a love for teaching.

Ignorant people are easier to control and manipulate than knowledgeable people. And the wealthy need pawns they can sacrifice to accumulate even more wealth. They need people who they can tell what to think, whom to hate, and how to vote.

Letter: The linguistic qualities of Utah English have a unique legacyLetter: The linguistic qualities of Utah English have a unique legacyBYU linguist David Ellingson Eddington’s quest to identify “Utah English” (The Tribune, Aug. 27) suffers, I think, from its focus on particular pronunciation characteristics. Certainly, we Utahns have an idiosyncratic pronunciation or two, but the linguistic qualities of Utah English have a unique legacy that, I think, is interesting enough to deserve a bit further explication.
