Being raised Roman Catholic, I was taught to respect Judaism as Christianity is derived from it. That being said, I am shocked, stunned and increasingly disturbed by the growing wave of antisemitism permeating throughout the United States: swastikas drawn on political signs and garage doors, headstones defaced at the Congregation Am Echod Jewish Cemetery in Waukegan and reprehensible acts of violence directed toward Jews .
While public schools in Illinois are mandated to teach the Holocaust and the Final Solution pursuant to Illinois Public Act 094-0478 since August 5, 2005, much more is needed. For example, during the holiday season, students should be provided the opportunity to learn about Hanukkah and the significance of the menorah.

Letter: It’s clear why Republican doctrine too often draws on LDS Church doctrineTribune readers occasionally express the wish that the LDS Church would get out of politics. While I share this sentiment, I don’t believe it’s possible given the current political makeup of church leadership. Some years ago the Tribune published an article on the political affiliations of the LDS First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve, and nearly all were currently or formerly registered as Republicans. To my knowledge, the last Democrat was James E. Faust, who died in 2007.
