Letter: 'Who pays for all these new venues? Taxpayers of course. Mention 'infrastructure' and you’ll immediately smell a few rats.'

Now, I’m a life-long baseball fan and I’m happy to recall going to games at what was then called Derks Field. At spring exhibition games, I saw Willie Mays hit home runs!

So what’s happening now? Larry H. Miller’s Salt Lake Bees are leaving for a new park in South Jordan. The University of Utah is abandoning Smiths Ballpark and building a new field up on the campus. The Miller Group wants to build a whole new stadium out on North Temple. Who pays for all these new venues? Taxpayers of course. Mention “infrastructure” and you’ll immediately smell a few rats. So, what about the current park on 1300 South? The strip mall industry is just slobbering at the idea of taking over and turning the “ballpark area” back into a crappy neighborhood.

Here’s an idea though — take the $400,000,000 earmarked for the Little Cottonwood Canyon gondola and give it to Major League Baseball. Nobody likes socialistic skiing anyway.
