We’re all doing our best during the coronavirus pandemic—including runners.
Dillon, who is also a runner, believes that we have always been easy targets. “I’ve been yelled at, even had people swerve their cars as though to hit me while out running, long before COVID-19, so I believe this anger is an extension of what was already there,” she said. “Our races interrupt traffic, our Facebook posts and conversations can be interpreted as condescending, boastful or attention-seeking.
Running serves a different purpose for each person. Some are running to relieve the anxiety and stress of COVID-19 trauma. Some run to, or keep us in recovery from addictions. Running is my go-to for my own anxiety. Needless to say, we all need running now more than ever. That includes Lucy Flood, a nurse practitioner in an emergency department.
“[COVID-19] has created an environment in our hospital that most of us have never witnessed before in our careers,” Flood says. “I’ve been thankful for the flexibility and probability of running, as well as for the stability of routine and mental health. It has provided the stress relief that I need, and it gives me both the physical and mental strength for work and home.”
