’ refusal to give a white man her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955, got her arrested and ignited a bus boycott that ultimately led to the dismantling of so many Jim Crow laws in the south. She later said, modestly, of her history-making act of resistance: “At the time I was arrested I had no idea it would turn into this. It was just a day like any other day. The only thing that made it significant was that the masses of the people joined in.
I’ll leave you with an excerpt from a testimony this year on February 28th at the Congressional Hearing in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. Incredibly, the ERA was written and proposed in 1923 by women’s rights advocate—who after reading it aloud that year in Seneca Falls said “I hope it is not another 72 years until this is passed”—and it has yet to be ratified. The dynamic speaker was, a Trinity College student and ERA Coalition Board Member.
