Tens of thousands of people have gathered at cenotaphs and local memorials to commemorate Anzac Day and remember the soldiers who scarified their lives in battle.

Proceedings kicked off in Sydney on Thursday at 4:20am, with servicemen, servicewomen and families turning out to Martin Place for the traditional dawn service. Huge crowds also turned across the city, including in the eastern suburbs, with not a spot left over on the hill for the service held at North Bondi RSL.Other similar moving services were held in other major capitals around the country and cities to mark the day Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli in 1915.
Just down the road on the Gold Coast, thousands of people commemorated at the spectacular Elephant Rock on Currumbin Beach while the sun rose.Similar scenes were witnessed across the Tasman in New Zealand.The traditional services will be followed by Anzac Day marches from 9am.The RNZAF perform a fly over as Aucklanders attend the dawn service at Auckland War Memorial Museum.
