Lessons in Chemistry director Millicent Shelton discusses fleshing out young Madeline, as well as collaborating with Brie Larson and Aja Naomi King.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Lessons in Chemistry episodes 5 and 6 finally get to the meat and potatoes of Elizabeth Zott ’s cooking show , Supper at Six, while also tying her past to the prism through which she views the present. Starring Brie Larson as scientist and stellar chef Elizabeth, Lessons in Chemistry is based on Bonnie Garmus' best-selling novel of the same name and adapted for television by Lee Eisenberg.
Millicent Shelton: You know, this is the thing, Alice is an amazing young actress. I started out in shows with young actors. I cut my teeth on Everybody Hates Chris. It was filled with really wonderful actors. I think I learned really early on in my career that, young actors, especially the really gifted ones, and Alice is one of the really gifted ones, you talk to the same way you talk to any actor, because they're an actor.
I also loved Reverend Wakely and his dynamic with Mad, that little investigation throughout, as well as how it juxtaposes his approach to religion, more questioning, more joyful, versus Elizabeth's upbringing and how she views it now. How intentional was that, and what was most important to you about those scenes?
You also have the actual first episode of Supper at Six. You really get to set the tone for what Elizabeth does with her show moving forward. How did you and the production team work together to make it both reminiscent of the era, but also something people in that era have not seen and are shocked by?
Aja Naomi King is amazing. We really dive into Harriet's interior life here and see how the racial tensions come into play for her. Also, the fact that the friendship's almost unbalanced in a way, because Elizabeth can't give her emotionally what Harriet has been giving her. Can you talk about really diving into her side of the story and working with Aja?
Brie and I discussed it, and Elizabeth does not know the history between Harriet and Calvin, or that Calvin didn't show up. As far as Elizabeth's concerned, I've been there and it's just something I can't do, because I'm trying to stay loyal to the crew. From Harriet's perspective, it's a deep hurt, because the pain of racial injustice cuts deep. For Blacks in America, it's something that has been pervasive throughout our lives.
