The shrinking Great Salt Lake could create more problems, with animals migrating in search of new food sources.
"From last summer, what I’m seeing is the grasses, the perennial grasses have thinned out," said Steven Bates, a wildlife biologist for Utah State Parks."So we lost some perennial grasses due to last summer’s water conditions."
"If we don’t have some substantial grasses on the island, then the wildlife do have a tendency to wander," Bates said, adding that animals have wandered off of the island in the past . "Since that lake level and the land bridges, there’s been a tendency but again that fence, we put it around the southern end of the island and just strategically it catches their movement and pushes them back to the island," Bates said.
