Actress Leslie Ash reflects on the 20th anniversary of contracting a superbug that left her unable to walk. Despite being told she'd be in a wheelchair by 60, Ash is walking with reduced reliance on a walking stick and maintains a positive outlook on her health.
It's now 20 years since actress Leslie Ash faced a horrifying ordeal where she contracted a scary superbug and was left unable to walk, threatening her whole future. She had been admitted to hospital in April 2004 after suffering two cracked ribs after falling off her bed during a love-making session with husband, ex-footballer Lee Chapman.
The actress, who is probably best known for playing Deborah in 1990s sitcom Men Behaving Badly, was told that she would be in a wheelchair by 60. But at 61 and determined to prove doubters wrong, Leslie was walking sometimes without the use of her walking stick. But she went onto reveal that she was feeling "healthy" - and had defied doctors' odds. "They said I'd be in a wheelchair by the time I was 60 but I'm very lucky," she said.
Leslie went onto appear in Where the Heart Is, Merseybeat and later Holby City, in which she played Vanessa Lytton for a year in 2009. Leslie also appeared in Casualty, Doctors and Sky Comedy Shorts.
