Leon Marlaire, a member of Alabama's renowned 'Rocket 8' SEC championship team in 1956, has passed away at the age of 90. Marlaire, known for his leadership and outside shooting, was a starting point guard for the Crimson Tide from 1953-56 and earned All-SEC honors. He was a founding member and first president of the Birmingham Tip Off Club and was honored as an SEC Basketball Legend in 2008.

We're saddened to share that one of our "Founding Fathers", Leon Marlaire, died this morning. Leon was our club’s first President & remained active and involved throughout his lifetime. He was a proud member of the "Rocket Eight", one of the greatestMarlaire, originally from Bradley, Ill., was starting point guard for the Crimson Tide from 1953-56, earning All-SEC honors as a sophomore.
Marlaire graduated from Alabama with a degree in business in 1956, and played professionally with a number of industrial league teams before settling in the Birmingham area and working as an executive for Baggett Transportation. He was married to his wife, Vicki , for 67 years until her death in 2023.
