After 27 years, the DEMS crew commander, Ntobeko Batakati , hung up his boots for the last time at the Leon Ferreira Fire Station on May 31.His career started after the 1994 elections when the South African Red Cross Society recruited him.
Batakati explained that joining the SARC made him realise his passion for making a difference in the community.The top firefighter elaborated on the one call-out that will stick with him – a car accident just after the Atlas Road bridge a few years ago. He said dealing with these incidents was difficult, but talking about it was how they got through it.He said the highlight of his career was the excitement of responding to calls, knowing he would be helping people.Ntobeko Batakati with his fiancé, Mbali Khumalo.Ntobeko Batakati enjoyed his farewell braai with his colleagues.
The DEMS spokesperson, William Ntladi, said losing a member of Batakati’s calibre and experience was sad.
