A surprise benching leads to one of UAB's best performances in the early portion of the season.
Near the end of what could’ve been a disastrous first half for the UAB Blazers that ended 37-36, head coach Andy Kennedy came onto the floor screaming at his star forward, Yaxel Lendeborg, upset that instead of using his 6-foot-10 frame to power his way through SE Louisiana defenders, he hung out toward the perimeter.
A quick foul from forward Bradley Ezewiro, forced him to the bench, and Lendeborg back to the floor. For the remainder of the game, he showed he understood his coach’s message, loud and clear. Lendeborg went on to score 17 points in the second half of an 82-72 victory over SE Louisiana.Lendeborg finished the day with 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists, 2 blocks and a steal.”He’s a pre-season player of the year, pre-season all-American by some publications.
Like Lendeborg, the Blazers turned their play around in the second half after a first 20-minutes riddled with missed defensive assignments, turnovers and an inability to capitalize on open looks had them only up one point on the SELU Lions, of the Southland Conference.“You can’t play the way this team is built to play in third gear and yet our guys want to play in third gear. Why? Because they’re human beings, and what do human beings want? Comfort.
For SELU, big games from Jakevi Buckley, who had 16 points and seven assists, and Jeremy Elyzee, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds, kept them in the game late, and had them up double-digits in the first half.
