Limoncello is a new eatery in East County serving authentic dishes inspired by Italy’s rich culture.
Owner Alberto Morreale, who was raised in Sicily, said food plays a special role there, connecting families and communities. “Being Italian, .. I always wanted to do something that really represents my country,” he said. “Limoncello was created for this purpose.”
The restaurant, at 8273 La Mesa Boulevard, is close to home for Morreale, who moved to East County years ago. He owns several other local restaurants, including Smokey & The Brisket, The Seventh House, Farmers Bottega and Farmer’s Table., he designed a “citrus haven” with Italian charm, colorful ceramic tiles and paintings of Italian actress Sophia Loren, as well as a menu true to his roots.
The restaurant will offer nearly seven handcrafted pastas infused with ingredients like lemon and spinach, made in house using an Italian pasta maker visible to the public, antipasti dishes with local, organic ingredients, fresh house-made focaccia and ciabatta, and heavier courses such as branzino cartoccio prepared with saffron, shaved fennel, artichoke, garlic, onions and potatoes, along with a dry-aged 32-ounce bone-in ribeye.
True to the southern Italy aesthetic, the restaurant will highlight a variety of lemon-infused dishes and desserts, with must-try items like Limoncello sponge cake, lemon sorbet and lemon creme brulee. A gelato cart is also in the works. “I love this town of La Mesa, it’s been really good to me,” said Morreale. “It’s been one of my dreams to do something that represents me...
