She opened up about having OCD, Tourette syndrome, depression, and ADHD in the first episode of her new documentary, The Secret Life of Lele Pons.
The Secret Life of Lele PonsIn the 26-minute video, Lele talks about the symptoms of her obsessive-compulsive disorder and other mental illnesses, explaining the impact they've had on her life and career. Lele gets very honest about her, including the stigma she's still struggling to overcome — she calls having OCD her “deepest, darkest secret,” saying she's still scared to publicly say she has it.
“When you have a condition that controls you most of the time, you wish you didn't have that,” Lele says. While mental health conditions like OCD often don't go away, there are ways to treat and cope with them. In fact, Lele opened up toabout seeking treatment for her OCD, saying she will sometimes go to month-long treatment programs.
"I've been doing that for a long time, sometimes my fans don't even notice when I'm gone. I have things accumulated, like content, but I've been to a ranch for a month without anyone [knowing]," she tells. "When it's really bad or when there's a really big project coming, that might trigger a lot of my stuff, I go there to prepare myself."
One of her symptoms, Lele says, includes feeling the need to repeat an action three times for fear something bad will happen if she doesn't. Lele even shows herself crying in the video as her therapist encourages her not to repeat an action for the third time. She explained these compulsions more to"I do a lot of touching, a lot of checking, I touch things, everything. I talk to someone but I repeat myself three times and they don't notice. I touch something three times.
Lele's family and her therapist speak throughout the video, explaining Lele's symptoms, treatment, and what exactly OCD is. According to the, OCD “features a pattern of unwanted thoughts and fears that lead you to do repetitive behaviors .” While Lele says in her video that she's scared to tell the world about her OCD, she's certainly not alone in having it.
