Dozens of parents, many emotional, spoke out at a meeting of the county commissioners following the controller's release of a report calling for change.

’s row officer, whose job is to monitor financial matters, released a nearly 100-page report Wednesday outlining concerns about potential mislabeling of parents as child abusers.

Esernio-Jenssen did not respond to a message this week seeking comment that was left through her office., strongly defended Esernio-Jenssen, acknowledging that “physicians specializing in child protective medicine are often the unfortunate target of emotionally driven and unsubstantiated criticism,” according to a statement from spokesman Brian Downs.

“A medical examination is one component among many factors, including evidence, photos, and witnesses that are considered by the judicial system or child protective services, who ultimately make the final decision about protective services.”, in which a parent or parents exaggerate, fake or even cause disease-like symptoms in a victim in an effort to appear as a heroic, self-sacrificing caregiver.

Munchausen syndrome by proxy is child abuse, as is its related diagnosis of Medical Child Abuse, according to Pinsley’s report. It wasn’t, however, the only diagnosis that drew his attention in reviewing child-abuse cases. “The blame for this failure lies with the process and procedures suggested by the state and implementation within counties,” the controller’s report states.
