Rep. Treadaway says the number of exhibition driving incidents has only gone up since the temperatures began to climb.

) - WBRC is On Your Side with the latest efforts to end the issue of exhibition driving in your community. City and state leaders are now working to give law enforcement more tools to find and punish those participating in the dangerous driving.

Bill sponsor, and former Birmingham Assistant Police Chief Allen Treadaway, says the cameras will be a force multiplier and send a strong message to those getting behind the wheel. “This type of behavior is putting lives in danger and the violators have to be caught. So, we are adjusting to them and you are going to see many more arrests with adding this extra component to this piece of legislation.” Rep. Treadaway says the number of exhibition driving incidents has only gone up since the temperatures began to climb. “We have got to clamp down on it. It is not only very unsafe for the individuals who are participating in this type of behavior, but for the citizens that are around. With that, there is also a lot of criminal activity involved.” Birmingham Police’s Operation Knight Rider was designed to limit the dangerous road antics in the Magic City . During the operations first weekend this April, police made 5 arrests, seized 7 vehicles, 3 of which were stolen, and seized 7 firearms, one of which was illegally modified. Rep. Treadaway says the cameras will recognize and identify vehicles and allow police to make arrests even hours after an exhibition driving incident. “We will show up at your door, we will show up at your work. We will find you. We will have BOLOs out on these types of vehicles all over the city and throughout the state, and when it pops up, you can expect that we are going to seize the vehicle. If it is stolen, you will be charged with that or any other violations that may be found once we seize that vehicle.” While the legislative session is winding down, Rep. Treadaway says the bill could make it to the house floor as early as next Tuesday and that there is still time for this to become law this legislative session.
