Supporters say it would curb classroom distractions and reduce pressure from social media.

To curb classroom distractions, added pressure or anxiety from social media, students' access to smartphones could be severely limited during the school day under legislation being drafted in the Pennsylvania legislature.State Sen. Ryan Aument , R-Lancaster County, announced this week he intended to introduce legislation requiring public schools in Pennsylvania to use secure, locking bags to block students from phones during instructional time.

That impact on students is undoing efforts and investments by the state and school districts, like a recent increase of $100 million in Pennsylvania's budget, to improve mental health in public schools, Aument said.'If we expect to move the needle on academic performance, ensuring that young people can read and do math, we have to address this issue and change the learning that has resulted from the widespread smartphone use and social media access,' he said.
