It was during his time at Arkansas that he formed a bond with Jerry Jones, who would later become the owner of the Dallas Cowboys. After college, Johnson embarked on a successful coaching career, starting as an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech in 1965. His first head coaching position came in 1979 at Oklahoma State University, followed by a transformative stint at the University of Miami. At Miami, Johnson led the Hurricanes to the 1987 National Championship, building on the success of his predecessor, Howard Schnellenberger.
