At Miami, Johnson led the Hurricanes to the 1987 National Championship, building on the success of his predecessor, Howard Schnellenberger. Johnson's impressive record of 52-9 at Miami paved the way for his opportunity to coach the Dallas Cowboys.In 1989, Johnson joined the Cowboys under the ownership of his former teammate, Jerry Jones.
