EXCLUSIVE: Ronnie Cowan said the UK Government 'clearly didn't understand the problem' when it allowed doctors to prescribe cannabis five years ago.
The legal prescription of medical cannabis in the UK has been an "unmitigated disaster" because many people cannot get it prescribed on the NHS, an SNP MP has claimed.
Some are being forced to shell out thousands of pounds each year on prescriptions to fund treatment for their loved ones. "We need the medical profession to train people to understand the uses of medical cannabis and finally be prepared to prescribe on the NHS." She said: "The law changed five years ago but there's been no movement since then regarding the NHS. Everybody's still having to go private. Its costing, for children, over £1,000 a month."There's kids that heavily rely on this. If you take them off their medicine or you run out of stock, the child's back in hospital having seizures again.
Cowan is holding an event in Westminster on Wednesday to call for medical cannabis to be made available on the NHS.The MP said: "There is a lack of research means that the medical professionals feel that they are not suitably informed, and it would seem they are positively discouraged from becoming better informed, on a number of aspects of medical cannabis.
