Legacy admissions are banned at Colorado’s public colleges
Nationally, legacy preferences are more prevalent at private colleges and the criticism of the practice has focused on ultra-selective schools. But efforts to eliminate legacy admissions across the board will likely intensify as part of the broader campaign to root out privilege in the admissions process, says Bob Schaeffer, acting director of FairTest, a nonprofit that advocates for fairness in admissions.
Robert Massa, a former enrollment manager at Johns Hopkins and other schools, agrees that more colleges will pull back on legacy admissions. But not completely. “I suspect that the benefit of having a parent or grandparent attend a private university will continue in some form,” he says. In blue states, legislatures may ban the practice at public institutions, he says.
