Leeds United and Millwall began a rivalry during the Whites first season in League One
Rivalry, in football, usually aligns with geography. Local hostilities that often stem further back in history than the sport itself. For Leeds United, however, that is rarely the case. The Whites have rarely had another club of the same size and stature within reach of Elland Road.
The two clubs have only faced each other 40 times but a 2013 survey still listed Millwall as the Whites’ third-biggest rivals - ahead of local enemy Huddersfield Town. Some may assume football hooliganism in the 70s and 80s would be the root of the problem but, in reality, the tensions arose much later.
Clashes eventually spilled out between fans and police, causing future fixtures to be played at 12pm on a Sunday. In 2010, a hugely unpopular and widely condemned anti-hooligan operation was introduced by West Yorkshire police, making Millwall fans collect away tickets at an M1 service station. Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds, in particular, enjoyed several thrilling days against the old enemy on their way to Premier League status. A dramatic comeback win the last time both sides met saw a Patrick Bamford brace inspire United from 2-0 down to snatch all three points.
