Leeds United inflicted only Leicester City's second defeat in a sea of 13 wins at King Power Stadium on Friday night with a performance that pushes the door ajar on unexpected developments
Leicester City are one of only two sides in the history of the second tier to win 13 of their opening 14 games, matching Bristol City in 1905/06. They were 14 points clear of Leeds United before kick-off, remained the only Championship side on single digits for goals conceded and no team had scored more than their 29 goals.
This was a statement of intent from both Daniel Farke and his players. The German is very well known to anyone familiar with the Championship over the past five years and his record precedes him. This is exactly the kind of match he came to master at Norwich City. This is why Leeds wanted him and this is why he was effectively asking Paraag Marathe to pitch the managerial position to him in interview.
The tactical set-up proved ideal, but Farke knew he would have to lean on his players to stand strong during long periods of sustained home pressure. United pressed aggressively in the opening phases of each half to great effect before seeing Leicester strangle possession. It’s not a result which directly blows apart the promotion race in one fell swoop, but it at least poses some questions and puts a significant marker down for Leeds. The gap may still be 11 points, but Farke’s side are not to be written off as the also-rans behind a runaway top two.
