Birmingham City appointed Wayne Rooney as their new manager this week in another show of ambition from one of Leeds United's promotion rivals

Leeds United's promotion rivals Birmingham City have made the biggest waves in the Championship over the international break, opting to show manager John Eustace the door in favour of a big-name appointment in Wayne Rooney. The former England skipper is the first hire by the club's new American owners Shelby Companies Limited.

With this latest hire Shelby Companies Limited are clearly intent on making a splash this season, but the club's chief executive Garry Cook admitted that similar ambition in the transfer market may not yet be possible."It's a good question," Cook said when fielding a question about any big push in the January transfer window at the unveiling of Rooney.

"What I think we've done though is built an organisation that is prepared to support the manager, be very, very astute in our recruitment process. But also at the same time, ensure that we're building the infrastructure to support the team, the facilities to support the team. And Premier League football is exactly what Rooney is targeting, with the former Everton and Manchester United man hinting that youth, rather than big-money arrivals could play a part in his attempt to see Blues back in the top flight for the first time since 2011.
