Lee Dawson murder accused 'tried to break up deadly fight' on way to buy crack cocaine with girlfriend, court hears
One of the men accused of murdering Lee Dawson has told the court he was trying to break up a fight in which Mr Dawson was stabbed to death.
The jury was shown CCTV which showed Benjamin Bibby, 20,, Brown and Cross, 33, running down the road with Mr Dawson. Brown said: "As I was running dow the street, I was going 'boys, boys, what's going on?' and nobody's responding to me. It's just travelling down the road, fast." He said the man who was bleeding went off in one direction and the other two men went the other way, and he thought the fight was over. But he told the court: "I came out into the middle of the road and the guy in the balaclava says, 'yo, I need to get my shank back'. I thought, 'what shank? I thought it was a fight.'
CCTV showed him, Metcalf and Cross walking away from the scene and stopping by some bins next to the Landmark Crossgate Church. Asked why the footage appeared to show him looking in the bins, he replied: Alex Leach, defending Brown, asked if at any point he thought about calling the police or an ambulance, but Brown said he wasn't thinking straight and 'didn't have a clue'. He said: "I'm like, 'whoa, whoa', Robert's panicking, Kerry-Ann's panicking and it's like, 'whoa, we haven't done anything wrong."
Mr Benson KC, prosecuting, asked why Brown told the police, during interview, that he wasn't present at the scene in East Street. Brown said: "I was panicking and I'd had nothing to do with it."
