Law enforcement agencies in east Alabama have upgraded their investigation tools by getting new advanced ballistic testing equipment.
Published: Aug. 7, 2024 at 6:03 PM CDTOPELIKA, Ala. - Some law enforcement agencies in east Alabama have enhanced their investigative capabilities with the introduction of advanced ballistic testing equipment.
“There are only a few out there around the state. It’s not common. You’re not going to find one at every agency,” said Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones. Sheriff Jones says the NIBIN system is a database that holds information from law enforcement agencies nationwide. The Auburn Police Department was able to receive a grant that allows the department to house the NIBIN lab in the department, which tremendously reduces wait times to receive evidence for Auburn and Opelika police departments, Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Lee County District Attorney’s Office.
