After my mother passed of Alzheimer's, I wondered who would be the next member of our family to experience the disease.

When my grandmother started her journey with Alzheimer’s disease nearly 13 years ago, my family knew so little about what lay ahead of us. We had very few resources to assist us; we went through many years of trying different drugs, adapting our lifestyles to new symptoms my grandmother developed, and becoming full-time caretakers.

After she passed, I started to think a lot about my mom, who’d likely be the next member of our family to experience the disease. I wanted to be more prepared when the time came, so I got involved with the Alzheimer’s Association. I learned that legislation, funding, and research could create a brighter future for my mom, myself, and more than 280,000 Pennsylvanians already living with Alzheimer’s. As a volunteer, I helped promote numerous senate bills, always with the hope that there would be a more formalized system for addressing the needs of the millions of Americans with the disease.

SB 840 is an enormous step in this direction, and I applaud Sen. Jay Costa for co-signing this bill. His work and advocacy will have an impact on so many - hopefully including myself in a few years.Anna Cappella, Pittsburgh, Pa.
