A small plane crash ed shortly after takeoff in Northeast Philadelphia near the Roosevelt Mall on Friday night, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Surveillance video appeared to show the jet plummeting to the ground near the intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and Cottman Avenue around 6:30 p.m. on January 31, 2025. The FAA issued a statement at approximately 7:30 p.m. on January 31 reporting that a Learjet 55 crashed after departing Northeast Philadelphia Airport.

The number of individuals aboard the aircraft remained unclear initially. The FAA stated that there were two people on board, while Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy indicated that six individuals were reportedly on the flight en route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri. A major incident unfolded near Cottman and Bustelton Avenues in Northeast Philadelphia, directly across from Roosevelt Mall. One video captured a driver waiting in a drive-thru line when the crash occurred. The individual recorded the aftermath using their phone, showing a large fire raging in the wake of the impact. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro conveyed his support, stating, 'We are offering all Commonwealth resources as they respond to the small private plane crash in Northeast Philly.'
