Leaked engineering samples of Nvidia GPUs, including a prototype of the RTX 4090 with four 16-pin power connectors, show the company's ambition to push power consumption to extreme levels. While these designs are unlikely to ever be released, they offer a glimpse into Nvidia's exploration of high-end graphics processing.
Nvidia's best graphics cards are infamous for their voracious power consumption , but recently leaked prototypes reveal that the company had even more ambitious plans. Several engineering samples surfaced on the Chiphell forums, including a prototype of the RTX 4090 featuring not one, not two, but four 16-pin power connectors. Will such designs ever see the light of day?The leaker shared images of board prototypes spanning back to the GTX 10 series, with the latest GPU being the RTX 4090 .
However, the leaker claims that the RTX 5090 was also prototyped with up to four power connectors, although a picture of such a card wasn't among the leaked boards.Four 16-pin power connectors is a staggering number. Looking at the AD102 prototype, which corresponds to the RTX 4090 model, we see these four 16-pin connectors alongside a 45-phase power delivery. One 12VHPWR connector allows for a maximum 600-watt power consumption, so using four would have pushed that figure to a mind-boggling 2,400 watts. This exceeds the power consumption of even the most high-end gaming PCs currently available and surpasses the capabilities of any power supply. A prototype like this suggests that Nvidia may have aspired to build something much larger, aligning with rumors of a potential Titan GPU. Such a card, which many leakers claim was actually developed for the Ada Lovelace lineup but ultimately shelved, would have significantly increased both overall specifications and power consumption. Would the RTX 4090 (or 5090) Titan have utilized four 12VHPWR connectors? Highly improbable. The highest number ever seen in a consumer GPU were overclocked variants of Nvidia's flagship models, manufactured by its board partners, which boasted two connectors. It's difficult to envision any GPU requiring that much power, nor would it be practical. We've already witnessed numerous instances of the 12VHPWR connector burning out, even in the RTX 5090, so adding three more is hardly a viable solution.Older GPU models were also featured in the leaked prototypes, with slightly less extreme power configurations. The Ampere generation was well represented: there was the GA102 Ampere board with four 8-pin connectors, but also the GA104 with three. Ampere cards eventually utilized 12-pin connectors outside the prototype stage, but it's clear that Nvidia experimented with various designs during development. It's crucial to remember that we can't take these prototypes at face value. While they appear legitimate, they didn't originate directly from Nvidia. Nevertheless, assuming these are all genuine, it's fascinating to see that Nvidia may have attempted to create a 2,400-watt GPU. Thankfully, those plans never came to fruition
