Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, the documentary sheds light on the ongoing struggles faced by inmates and their families, highlighting cases like Pamela Moser's son Brian, who died after a beating and alleged medical neglect. The U.S. Department of Justice is suing the state over unconstitutional conditions, citing overcrowding and violence. Researcher Eddie Burkhalter from Alabama Appleseed points to a severe shortage of correctional officers and a high prison population as contributing factors. The documentary also exposes the pervasive drug problem within prisons and the lack of transparency surrounding inmate deaths.

The U.S. Department of Justice is suing the state over what it calls unconstitutional conditions citing the prison violence and overcrowding. With fewer paroles of even those deemed safe to be released, the prison population remains well over capacity at 168%. Some prisons like Kilby are at 218% capacity according to Burkhalter's research.That’s still more than four times the national average for prison deaths explained Burkhalter. Since 2021 when there were 118 deaths; the numbers have increased by 134%. Some of the preventable causes of death include drug overdoses, suicides, and homicides.
