In the pouring rain of the third quarter Saturday morning, two League City defenders stop Deer Park's C.P. Ponce for little gain. The Freshmen Cowboys are Super Bowl champs after their 27-0 win at Aveva Stadium.HOUSTON - Whether it's hot and humid or cold and wet, the League City Freshmen Cowboys proved Saturday morning they are the best in the South Texas Youth Football Association neighborhood.
Playing in miserable conditions with a steady, cold rain falling most of the contest, the Cowboys accumulated in the neighborhood of 175 rushing yards, while the defense just didn't permit the Tigers to come anywhere close to sniffing the end zone. The Cowboys were upset with themselves after their first possession when they turned the ball over on downs at the Tigers 14-yard-line with 3:35 left in the first quarter. But the Cowboys defense made sure the Tigers couldn't escape the shadow of their own end zone and that produced the fourth down desperation pass that Kelly picked off.
The defense rose to the occasion again when Landon Stevens promptly recovered a Tigers fumble and seconds later Wilsey broke free for a 41-yard scoring run just 16 seconds after Kelly's second touchdown. Luke Williamson added the PAT for a commanding 21-0 advantage.
