There is a stampede toward AI, and many enterprises are sprinting without a map. Headlines celebrate overnight breakthroughs, vendors promise transformation and boards push for rapid deployment. Then, reality hits.

Projects stall in pilots, models behave unpredictably, biases surface in production and regulators start asking hard questions. Multiple observers have warned that most AI projects never deliver the intended business value, with Gartner, Inc.'s widely cited analysis putting the failure rateIf your organization is integrating AI without an ethical and human-centered compass, you're not only risking budget and timelines; you are courting a trust crisis.• "How do we explain black-box decisions to regulators, customers or courts?"said they would be uncomfortable if their healthcare provider relied heavily on AI. Trust is fragile, and sector context matters.The Case For A Human-Centric Approach Human-centric AI is a practical leadership strategy and framework that can reduce risk, accelerate adoption and build durable trust. In my, I argue for five principles that convert ethics into execution so teams can deliver value without compromising people or rights. These principles align with what leading academic and policy sources are signaling about transparency, fairness, accountability and long-term impact.Executives should assign responsibility for documentation to both technical leads and a cross-functional compliance steward. It's not a "one-department" job. Rather, it's collaborative. This documentation should include:2. Accountability: Assign, Escalate, Own Leaders must formally assign model ownership to the product owner or executive sponsor who greenlights deployment. This means they are answerable if things go sideways. They also need to create a cross-functional review board that unquestionably includes legal, security, ethics/compliance and product teams. Marketing, HR and DEI leadership are optional—yet highly recommended—inclusions.Executives can embed bias testing into model validation through the use of tools such as IBM's AI Fairness 360 or Google's What-If Tool to detect disparate impact. They can also establish an internal "AI bias task force" that includes domain experts, ethicists and representatives from impacted user groups and set up hotlines or anonymous forms for employees and customers to flag unfair outcomes.Leaders should host cross-functional AI design sprints that include developers, user researchers, compliance and customer success before co-creating user personas with real humans, not just marketing archetypes, especially those from vulnerable or underrepresented groups.Organizations can choose greener models and encourage the use of distilled models over massive LLMs when feasible. Then, track compute costs and emissions. They should also have a full understanding of the AI system's workforce impact by mapping which roles will be enhanced, displaced or require reskilling, and they should conduct external stakeholder workshops to anticipate second- and third-order effects to grasp societal readiness. For example, an organization could conduct a sustainability impact audit during the model planning stage and then publish a "Responsible Deployment Plan" with metrics such as energy use, retraining investment and DEI outcomes.Healthcare models trained on non-representative data have underserved minority patients. Face recognition systems have produced far higher false positive rates for certain demographics, a problem with public safety and civil rights implications. These are not edge cases, and they're not just technical defects. Rather, they're board-level risks with legal, reputational and human consequences.AI is a front-page matter of safety, equity, privacy and competitiveness. Regulators are moving, customers are skeptical in sensitive domains, and budget committees are losing patience with pilots that never scale.
