Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb declared lead abatement his number one priority for the city
CLEVELAND, Ohio - An event to raise awareness of the lead paint problem in Cleveland has walkers dodging raindrops but facing the problem.“Cleveland!” came the response from the crowd as they walked.
About 100 people walked across the Hope Memorial Bridge, from the Western Reserve Fire Museum to Fairview Park in Ohio City with Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb kicking off the walk with a message.That fight against the enemy comes as the city struggles with lead abatement compliance from landlords. So, the Mayor has introduced residents’ legislation to help, created a lead cabinet in the administration, and hired a dedicated new prosecutor to hold landlords criminally accountable.
“A lot of the housing in Cleveland is older so, built before 1978, when they used lead paint so a lot of the housing in Cleveland contains lead paint,” said Imara Hasan with one of the walk’s partners, Environmental Health Watch. “The walk is to spread awareness about lead hazards within the city of Cleveland,” said Veesh Fox of Environment Health Watch. “One in every four children gets poisoned before they enter kindergarten.
