An assistant US attorney in New York resigned, accusing the Trump DOJ of attempting to dismiss bribery charges against Mayor Eric Adams in exchange for political loyalty.
Hagan Scotten , an assistant US attorney in the Southern District of New York and the lead prosecutor on the case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, resigned in a scathing letter. Scotten stated that dismissing the bribery, corruption, and other charges against Adams was a “serious mistake” that keeps Hizzoner beholden to President Trump. He argued that using prosecutorial power to influence elected officials in this manner is unlawful and detrimental to American legal traditions.
\Scotten specifically criticized the Trump DOJ’s “dismissal-with-leverage” proposal, which he deemed a ploy to force the mayor to comply with Trump's objectives. He acknowledged that Trump, with his background in business and politics, might view this as a favorable deal, but he asserted that DOJ lawyers should possess a deeper understanding of the law. \Scotten’s resignation follows that of interim Manhattan US attorney Danielle Sassoon, who also resigned rather than follow the order to drop the case against Adams. Sassoon accused Adams of agreeing to follow Trump’s immigration orders and claimed that the case had been politicized. Acting DOJ No. 2, Emil Bove, responded by stating that prosecuting Adams was “directly endangering the lives of millions of New Yorkers” and that Adams's refusal to comply with Trump's orders would hinder his ability to communicate effectively with city officials and federal agencies. Scotten was one of four prosecutors placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation by the US Attorney General’s Office. The DOJ's public integrity section in DC was tasked with taking over the case, but several prosecutors there also resigned. \Adams has pleaded not guilty to charges of accepting $123,000 in travel perks from Turkish nationals in exchange for expediting the opening of the Turkish Consulate in Manhattan
