A study reveals that exposure to lead from gasoline during childhood resulted in millions of excess cases of psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, depression, and ADHD, over the last 75 years.

Exposure to lead from gasoline during childhood has resulted in millions of excess cases of psychiatric disorders over the last 75 years, according to a new study. Researchers from Duke University, Florida State University, and the Medical University of South Carolina analyzed childhood blood lead levels from 1940 to 2015 and found that an estimated 151 million excess mental health disorders were attributable to lead exposure from car exhaust.

The study indicated that lead exposure lowered people’s capacity for impulse control and made them more inclined to be neurotic. The impact was most pronounced for those born between 1966 and 1986, with the peak exposure occurring in the mid-1960s and mid-1970s
