Prominent Victorian barrister Stuart Wood KC says there is a “big incentive” for lawyers to be seen supporting the Voice to Parliament.

According to Stuart Wood AM KC, the large amount of government work available created a “big incentive” for Victorian barristers to “be seen to be pursuing or supporting the biggest client’s agenda”.

This came after the association’s 21-member Bar Council received a petition signed by 300 barristers urging it to follow the lead of the NSW Bar Council and publicly support the Yes campaign. “Most of the litigation concerns government and the citizen, it might be more than 50 per cent, maybe 60 per cent - I mean we're talking about hundreds of millions of dollars spent by the state and federal governments in the courts in Victoria.

The highly-respected Victorian barrister said that this availability of government work created an incentive for Barristers to support the proposal, since their opportunity to be granted government legal briefs would be increased if they show they are on board with the agenda – which clearly includes the Voice to Parliament.
