A Las Vegas performer is suing Taylor Swift, alleging that the pop star's album 'The Life of a Showgirl' infringes on her trademarked 'Confessions of a Showgirl' brand. The lawsuit claims similarities in branding and target audience. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office initially rejected Swift's trademark application due to the potential for confusion.

A Las Vegas performer is suing Taylor Swift, alleging the pop star’s latest album branding infringes on her long-running “showgirl” trademark. Swift’s 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” was announced in August and debuted in October. The album art features art deco imagery and glamorous feathered outfits, leaning into burlesque aesthetics for Swift’s newest era. In a lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, singer and columnist Maren Wade claims Swift’s album branding is too similar to Wade’s newspaper column-turned-show, “Confessions of a Showgirl.” “Both share the same structure, the same dominant phrase, and the same overall commercial impression,” the complaint says. “Both are used in overlapping markets and are directed at the same consumers.” Wade’s weekly column about her life in the entertainment industry launched in Las Vegas Weekly in 2014 and later expanded into a podcast and a live cabaret show. Her “Confessions of a Showgirl” branding has been trademarked since 2015. The lawsuit alleges Swift and her team should have recognized the similarities. “Maren spent more than a decade building CONFESSIONS OF A SHOWGIRL. She registered it. She earned it,” Wade’s attorney, Jaymie Parkkinen, wrote in a statement. “When Taylor Swift’s team applied to register THE LIFE OF A SHOWGIRL, the Trademark Office refused, finding Swift’s mark confusingly similar.” The lawsuit also claims the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office notified Swift’s team that “The Life of a Showgirl” was likely to be confused with an existing trademark, but that Swift “continued using it anyway” without contacting Wade. Because Swift’s “overwhelming commercial presence” could drown out Wade’s original branding, the lawsuit argues consumers might begin to assume Wade’s brand is an imitation of Swift’s newer one. “We have great respect for Swift’s talent and success, but trademark law exists to ensure that creators at all levels can protect what they’ve built,” Parkkinen added. “That’s what this case is about.” Wade is asking the court to permanently prevent Swift and her companies from using “The Life of a Showgirl” as a brand name on products or services. She is also seeking to have Swift turn over to Wade all profits earned from the sale of goods under the “Life of a Showgirl” branding, along with a jury trial and additional monetary compensation. No serious injuries were reported after 11 vehicles were involved in a crash Monday on Interstate 590, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.Auburn, N.Y. — A correction officer is accused of bringing significant amounts of drugs to work at Cayuga Correctional Facility after a joint investigation byInjured Greece police K-9 finds new forever home with Army veteran Greece, N.Y. — A former police dog injured during a training event is now settling into his new home.
