Ellis County residents Leslie Jefferson and Andrew White sued Waxahachie Independent School District board members and three school administrators, according to a 34-page complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. The parents say actions taken against their children violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits institutions that receive federal funding from discriminating against people based on race, among other laws.
The lawsuit described the teens as frequent targets of bullying, including cyberbullying on social media, and accused school administrators of inaction when informed of the harassment.According to the lawsuit, one of the teens was involved in a physical confrontation with a white peer who poured a beverage on her head as the teen sat at a lunch table. While the teen was suspended, the white peer was “either not disciplined or received lesser discipline,” the lawsuit said.
