A new lawsuit accuses the U.S. Army of negligence in failing to prevent a mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, last year.
A lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court alleges that U.S. Army officials failed to adequately respond to warning signs regarding Robert Card , an Army reservist who carried out the mass shooting in Lewiston , Maine , last year. The lawsuit, representing over 100 survivors and victims' family members, accuses the government of negligence, arguing that their actions directly contributed to the tragedy.
The suit claims that Army officials were aware of Card's mental health struggles, including paranoia, delusional behavior, and violent tendencies. They were also aware of his access to firearms and had promised his family and community they would take action to prevent him from harming others. However, the lawsuit alleges that the Army failed to uphold this promise, neglecting to ensure Card was taking his medication or following up on his care after a hospitalization.Furthermore, the lawsuit alleges that the Army withheld information and actively misled local law enforcement, preventing potential interventions that could have stopped the shooting. It cites a text message sent by a fellow reservist in September 2022 expressing concern that Card would carry out a mass shooting, as well as testimony from Card himself stating that he had a 'hit list' during a hospital stay. The lawsuit argues that the Army's disregard for its own policies and procedures, coupled with senior officials' failure to take appropriate action, ultimately led to the devastating consequences of the shooting
