Sheneen McClain, right, the mother of Elijah McClain, and friend and supporter MiDian Holmes, left, leave the Adams County Justice Center in Brighton on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024. Former Aurora police officer Randy Roedema was sentenced to 14 months in jail for criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault in Elijah McClain’s death, which was preceded in part by the use of prone restraint by police.
Law enforcement’s use of prone restraint has gained national attention since George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer kneeling on his neck in spring 2020, an incident that launched a summer of protests nationally, including in Denver. “It should only be used for a matter of seconds, to secure an individual,” Herod said. “Once secured, they should be immediately brought to a recovery position that allows for normal breathing, whether it be on their side, sitting up or standing — whatever allows that individual to breathe.”
“It is important to stress that the prone restraint is not a go-to tactic, but a safe and effective tool,” said Glynell Horn, the deputy chief of the Regional Transportation District’s police department. “I’d be remiss if I did not mention that in my experience, it has successfully deescalated and minimized injury to those directly involved, as well as the public.”
