An Alabama lawmaker is prefiling a bill that would allow parents the option for their children to pray in school.
) - President Donald Trump announced that the Department of Education would be issuing a new guidance on prayer in schools during a speaking engagement on Monday in Washington, D.C. Republican Rep. Reed Ingram is once again filing a bill for a constitutional amendment that would allow parents to give their children permission to pray in school.
Rep. Ingram’s prefiled bill, if passed by the Alabama legislature, would lead to a constitutional amendment. If passed by Alabama voters, it would give school boards 90 days to vote. Then parents would be allowed to choose whether or not to allow their child to participate in prayer at school. “If they have permission from the parent, it’s okay for them to study the Bible or to pray, then they can go to that classroom with other Christians and pray,” said Rep. Ingram. “This country was built on Christianity, so let our people pray.” However, the Reverand Julie Conrady, the president of the Interfaith Alliance of Central Alabama, said President Trump’s message, and legislation to bring prayer into schools, are detrimental.Rev. Conrady said the interfaith coalition in the state has kept prior attempts at bills relating to prayer in schools from getting to the governor’s desk. “To say that this belief, this practice, this policy, these laws are actually something that originates with Jesus is just a gross misinterpretation of His teachings,” she said. When asked about the concern regarding whether the bill crosses the line between church and state, Rep. Ingram pushed back. “This is not about forcing any religion on anybody it’s just that if they want to pray, they can meet with other Christian students and be able to pray,” he said. “If you don’t want to pray, don’t go to that classroom.” President Trump has said neither what the exact guidelines from the Dept. of Education could look like nor when they could be adopted.Authorities identify suspect in connection to Charlie Kirk’s killing as 22-year-old from Utah
