The US is facing a debate over the definition of PFAS, known as 'forever chemicals'. While new limits on these compounds in drinking water have been established, lawmakers are pushing for a narrower definition that excludes certain toxic materials called 'f-gases', which are used in appliances and break down into PFAS. Experts warn this could be detrimental to public health.
Logan Feeney pours a PFAS water sample into a container for research, Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at a U.S. Environment al Protection Agency lab in Cincinnati. The Environment al Protection Agency on Wednesday announced its first-ever limits for several common types of PFAS , the so-called " forever chemicals ," in drinking water .
Stephanie Eick, a professor in the School of Public Health at Emory University said in many cases, "f-gases" are considered a precursor to PFAS. We know that many "f-gases" break down and become PFAS and many of these PFAS we know are really harmful to human health," said Eick. "The things that are present at military bases because of the use of firefighting foam. The products that get formed from "f-gas" degradation are very different," Higgins said.
