Members of the Welsh Senedd are considering a law which would ban politicians from deliberately lying as part of their job
Over two-thirds of Britons back bringing in a law to make it illegal for politicians to knowingly lie to the public, new polling has shown.
If the law is passed by Senedd Assembly Members it would make Wales the first parliament in the world to make lying by politicians a criminal offence. The wording of the amendment to the Bill, due to be voted on in the coming week, suggests it will ensure that “politicians pause to think before making a statement that may be false” and “will allow the public to be confident that our politicians are not taking them from granted”.
Jennifer Nadel, co-director of Compassion in Politics, said that politicians “shouldn’t be exempt from the rules that most of us live by” and that rules were already in place to prevent lying in other industries and professions.
