Law enforcement agencies in the United States are intensifying their surveillance efforts amid growing concerns over potential Iranian sleeper cells operating within the country,Officials have raised alarms about suspected terrorists possibly entering the U.S. through open borders, with some warning of threats reminiscent of past attacks. Jonathan Gilliam, a former FBI special agent, expressed concerns about the potential presence of sleeper cells in an interview with"With the way that our border was down for four years, there could be cells here that could be activated by Iran or proxies and groups that are loyal to Iran," he said."It’s coming. It should scare the hell out of every American what the Biden Administration did," Homan said. "There’s two million known gotaways - scares the hell out of me. So I’m convinced something’s coming unless we can find them,." The FBI has reportedly increased its monitoring of Hezbollah-linked sleeper cells as tensions rise following military actions in the Middle East. Concerns about sleeper cells resurfaced after a U.S. drone strike in 2020 killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, prompting Iran to vow revenge. In November, the Justice Department announced it had thwarted a plot to assassinate President Donald Trump., stated, "If they did that, they would be obliterated. That would be the end. I've left instructions. If they do it, they get obliterated. There won't be anything left."James Carafano, a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation, highlighted the challenge of identifying sleeper cells. "The problem with saying, well, how good are these cells, well is if they’re a really good sleeper cell, you don’t know about them until they do something," Carafano said. Gilliam emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating, "We need to be prepared, Israel needs to be prepared for those types of attacks. And the number one way for citizenry to be aware and that’s what’s going to prevent the majority of this."living in the U.S. was sentenced to 40 years in prison for plotting attacks in New York. Officials continue to stress the need for vigilance against potential threats.
